CodeBears

Empowering Young Minds Through Computing.

CodeBears creates opportunities for K–12 students to explore computer science and emerging technologies through hands-on, engaging, and creative learning experiences.

Through educational programming and community engagement, we aim to build foundational computing knowledge, encourage curiosity, and help learners see themselves as creators of technology.

CodeBears Camp Recap

Robots on the maze mat, game design, VR, field trips and demo day: a look back at a summer of campers building with technology.

About CodeBears

Mission

CodeBears is a K–12 computer science education and outreach initiative that Dr. Naja A. Mack founded through the HAX Lab at Morgan State University in 2023. It introduces learners to coding, AI, robotics, and game development through hands-on experiences.

Educational approach

Our approach emphasizes creativity, exploration, collaboration, and learning by doing. Rather than simply teaching students how to use technology, we encourage them to become creators, designers, and problem-solvers.

Who we serve

K–12 learners across Baltimore. Summer camps serve upper elementary and middle school students, and STEM days reach students from kindergarten through middle school at schools, universities, and community events.

Programs

Ongoing Planned
Ongoing

Summer camps

Two-week camps on campus: a free pilot for 36 students in 2023, two sessions of 40+ campers each in 2024, and one session of 30+ campers in 2025 with a NASA field trip. Each camp ends with a science fair–style showcase for family and friends.

Ongoing

Saturday Academy

In Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, 50+ campers came to campus twice a month.

Ongoing

Spring break camps

Three-day day camps on campus: 30+ campers in 2024 and 24 in 2025.

Ongoing

STEM days

Hands-on computer science, robotics, and AI at schools, universities, and community events across Baltimore, reaching 2,100+ K–12 students since 2024.

Planned

What comes next

A 2027 summer camp, continued Saturday Academy and STEM days, and professional development workshops for K–12 teachers.

Dates and registration details will be shared here once they are confirmed.

What Students Explore

Programming
Campers program drones and code robots through taped floor mazes.
Artificial intelligence
A summer camp topic in 2024 and 2025. At AI Day 2024, middle school basketball players explored computer vision.
Game development
A summer camp topic in 2024 and 2025. In 2025 it was paired with NASA education.
Robotics
Robot obstacle courses, robot soccer, and floor mazes at STEM days across Baltimore.
Physical computing
Makey Makey controllers wired to play dough at the 2024 Morgan State STEM Expo.
Music production
A summer camp topic in 2024, alongside AI and game development.

Learning Through Doing

Rather than simply teaching students how to use technology, we encourage them to become creators, designers, and problem-solvers.

Project-based learningEvery summer camp ends with a science fair–style showcase where campers present their projects to family and friends.
CollaborationCampers work in small groups of four, grouped by grade level.
CreativityCampers create their own projects in AI, game development, and music production.
Hands-on experimentationActivities are hands-on and game-based, with instruction adapted to different learning styles.
